What Is a Dental Crown? A Mississauga Patient Guide

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. At Trio Dentistry in Mississauga, crowns are recommended for heavily filled or cracked teeth, after root canal treatment, or for cosmetic or structural enhancement, in porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic options.

Why a Small Cap Can Save a Whole Tooth

  • A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth, so it protects what is left of a weak or damaged tooth
  • "Cap" and "crown" mean the same thing: cap is simply the everyday word
  • Common reasons include a heavily filled tooth, a cracked tooth, a tooth after root canal treatment, and cosmetic or structural changes
  • Material matters: Trio Dentistry offers porcelain fused to metal (PFM) and all-ceramic crowns, such as zirconia or e.max
  • With good care, crowns typically last eight to ten years, and daily brushing and flossing still matter

If your dentist has said you need a crown, you probably have questions. What exactly is it? Will it look like your own tooth? How many visits will it take? These are some of the most common questions we hear from patients in Mississauga.

This guide answers them in plain language. You will learn what is a dental crown, when one is needed, which materials are available, what happens during each visit, and how to make your crown last.

What Is a Dental Crown, Exactly?

A crown is a hollow, tooth-shaped cover that fits over a natural tooth that has been prepared for it. Once it is cemented in place, it covers the whole visible part of the tooth above the gum line.

The Canadian Dental Association explains that a crown, also called a cap, covers and protects the natural tooth underneath and can restore its shape, strength and appearance. Once placed, it looks and works much like a natural tooth.

A dental tooth crown is different from a filling. A filling repairs one part of a tooth. A crown wraps around the entire tooth, which is why it is used when there is not enough healthy structure left to hold a filling well.

Is a Dental Cap the Same as a Crown?

Yes. The dental cap vs crown question comes up often, but the two words describe the same restoration. "Cap" is the older, everyday word. Dentists usually say "crown" because it matches the clinical term.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

At Trio Dentistry, a crown is usually recommended in these situations:

  • A heavily filled tooth: when large fillings have replaced much of the tooth, the remaining walls can be weak
  • A cracked tooth: a crown holds the tooth together and helps protect it from further cracking
  • After root canal treatment: a treated tooth can become more fragile, so a crown is often placed to protect it
  • Cosmetic or structural enhancement: for a tooth that is badly shaped, worn or discoloured

Crowns are also part of bigger treatment plans. They can anchor a bridge, sit on top of a dental implant, or form part of a full smile plan. For children, our team also provides fillings and crowns for kids when a baby tooth or young permanent tooth needs extra protection.

Signs a Tooth May Need More Than a Filling

Only an exam and X-rays can confirm it, but these are common reasons patients come in:

  • A tooth with an old, large filling that has started to break
  • A visible crack, or pain when you bite down on one spot
  • A tooth that has darkened or changed shape over time
  • A tooth that was treated with a root canal and has not yet been restored

If a tooth hurts on its own, wakes you at night or reacts to hot drinks for a long time, the problem may be inside the tooth. Our guide on how to know if you need a root canal explains those signs in more detail.

Dental Crown Materials: Which One Is Right for You?

The best dental crown material depends on the tooth, your bite and how much the crown will show when you smile. At Trio Dentistry, the options are:

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM)

A PFM crown has a metal base covered with tooth-coloured porcelain. It combines strength with a natural look. In some cases, a thin dark line of metal may show near the gum line over time.

All-Ceramic Crowns (Zirconia or E.max)

All-ceramic crowns have no metal. Two common types are:

  • Zirconia: a very strong ceramic. A zirconia dental crown is often chosen for back teeth that handle heavy chewing
  • E.max (lithium disilicate): a ceramic known for its natural, light-reflecting look, often chosen where appearance matters most

What About a Dental Crown on a Front Tooth?

For a dental crown front tooth case, appearance is usually the top priority. All-ceramic materials are often preferred because there is no metal to show at the gum line. Your dentist will match the shade and shape to the teeth beside it.

Other materials exist, such as gold or resin. The Canadian Dental Association notes that each material has trade-offs in strength, wear and appearance. Your dentist will suggest the material that suits your tooth.

The Dental Crown Procedure, Step by Step

Many patients feel calmer once they know what to expect. At Trio Dentistry, the dental crown procedure follows these steps:

  • Consultation and imaging. Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to check the roots and the surrounding bone.
  • Tooth preparation. The area is numbed with local anesthesia. The tooth is then gently shaped to make room for the crown.
  • Impression or digital scan. An impression or scan of the prepared tooth and its neighbours is used to custom-make your crown.
  • Temporary crown, if needed. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made.
  • Final placement with your feedback. Your dentist checks the fit, colour and bite, asks how it feels, and then cements the final crown.
  • You leave with verbal and written instructions on caring for your new crown.

Will It Hurt?

The tooth is numbed before any shaping begins, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. If you feel nervous at the dentist, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available at our Mississauga clinic for patients with dental anxiety.

What Is a Dental Crown on an Implant?

A crown does not always sit on a natural tooth. When a tooth is missing, a titanium implant can replace the root, and a dental implant crown is attached on top to replace the visible part.

The crown looks like the other crowns described above, but it is supported by the implant instead of a prepared tooth. If you are missing a tooth, our page on dental implants in Mississauga explains how implants replace single or multiple missing teeth.

Crowns, Veneers and Bonding: How They Differ

Patients often compare a crown with other ways to improve a tooth. The main difference is how much of the tooth each one covers:

  • Bonding adds tooth-coloured composite resin to part of a tooth. It is the most conservative option for small chips or gaps
  • A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth, mainly for cosmetic changes. Learn more about veneers in Mississauga
  • A crown covers the whole tooth, so it is used when the tooth also needs strength and protection

For a side-by-side look, read our article on dental bonding vs veneers vs crowns.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

At Trio Dentistry, crowns typically last eight to ten years. How long yours lasts depends on your habits, your bite and how well you look after the tooth underneath.

A crown cannot decay, but the natural tooth under its edge still can. That is why the margin where the crown meets the tooth needs daily cleaning.

How to Care for Your Crown

  • Brush twice a day and floss once a day, paying attention to the gum line around the crown
  • Avoid chewing ice, pens or hard candy, which can chip porcelain
  • Do not use your teeth as tools to open packages or bottles
  • Keep your regular checkups so your dentist can check the crown edges and your bite

If you clench or grind your teeth, ask about custom night guards in Mississauga. Grinding puts extra force on crowns and natural teeth alike.

Planning for Your Crown

A crown is a custom restoration, so the fee depends on the tooth and the material. At Trio Dentistry, the cost range for a crown is $800 to $1,200 per unit. Final pricing varies based on your individual clinical needs. Our page on dental crowns and bridges in Mississauga explains the options and what affects the fee.

If your tooth needs a root canal first, the crown is placed after a healing period. Your treatment plan will show each step in order, so you know what comes next.

FAQs About Dental Crowns

Is a dental cap the same as a crown?

Yes. "Cap" and "crown" describe the same restoration: a custom cover that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth. Dentists usually say "crown", while many patients say "cap". Both protect a weak or damaged tooth and restore its shape.

Can you put a crown on a front tooth?

Yes. Front teeth can be crowned when they are cracked, heavily filled, badly discoloured or misshapen. All-ceramic materials such as e.max or zirconia are often chosen for front teeth because there is no metal to show at the gum line, and the shade is matched to your other teeth.

How long does a temporary crown last?

A temporary crown is designed to last only until your final crown is ready to be placed. It is made of a softer material, so avoid sticky and hard foods on that side and chew carefully. If it becomes loose or falls off, call your dentist so the tooth stays protected.

Can I brush and floss with a temporary crown?

Yes, and you should. Brush gently around it as usual. When you floss, slide the floss out to the side instead of pulling it back up, so the temporary crown is not lifted off. Keeping the area clean helps your gums stay healthy before the final crown goes on.

What is a dental implant crown?

A dental implant crown is the visible, tooth-shaped part of an implant restoration. A titanium implant replaces the missing root, and the crown is attached on top so it looks and works like a natural tooth. It is cleaned with daily brushing and flossing, just like your other teeth.

Wondering Whether Your Tooth Needs a Crown?

A cracked tooth or a large old filling does not always hurt at first, so it is easy to put off. A short exam can tell you whether a crown, a filling or another option makes the most sense.

  • Two material options: porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic crowns, such as zirconia or e.max
  • A clear process: consultation and imaging first, a temporary crown if needed, and final placement only after you give your feedback
  • Comfort options: nitrous oxide is available for patients who feel anxious about dental visits
